Apex Legends Ranked Mode - Explained

Apex ranked mode is a competitive mode that allows players to engage with other players in any competitive match. The matchmaking system ensures that any player is only matched with players having the same or similar other ranks to the player's current rank.

To get started, you must be at level 20 or higher. Once you unlock rank mode, you can continue ranking and playing in higher tiers. Your Apex Legends rank will reset at the beginning and the halfway point of each season. And yes, there are also ranked rewards at the end of each season. Moreover, as you increase your RP, ranked matches become more complex.

When you play Apex ranked for the first time, you’ll start at 1 RP. However, if you played ranked last season and reached a particular stage in the ranking system, you’ll begin with a reset point determined by the rank you reached at the end of the last Season.

Understanding Apex Legends Matchmaking Process

Rank Points (RP) is the core of the matchmaking system in Apex Legends. Players in the lobby are paired up with others of comparable rank points. However, this does not mean that everyone in your game will be at the identical rank point level as you; it means that they are not that far off from your general ranking.

In teams, you can only pair up if you are within three sub-divisions from each other. During the game's matchmaking process, the system looks at your team's highest-level player and matches you with others of similar ranks i.e., within three sub-divisions of the most skilled player's rank in your team.

What To Know About RP in Apex Legends?

Ranked Points (RP) are at the core of the Apex Legends ranked system. Your RP shows your rank, skill level, and progress in the game. You get RP for doing well in ranked matches, like getting kills and assists.

The RP needed to play ranked matches goes up as you get better. This makes sure you play against people of similar skill and performance.

All Lowest to Highest Ranks in Apex Legends

all apex legends ranks

There are eight Apex Legend ranks, further divided into four divisions. These divisions are as follows in order of increasing value:

  • Rookie IV, Rookie III, Rookie II, Rookie I
  • Bronze IV, Bronze III, Bronze II, Bronze I
  • Silver IV, Silver III, Silver II, Silver I
  • Gold IV, Gold III, Gold II, Gold I
  • Platinum IV, Platinum III, Platinum II, Platinum I
  • Diamond IV, Diamond III, Diamond II, Diamond I
  • Master IV, Master III, Master II, Master I
  • Apex Predator

As seen above, the Apex Predator rank is the only rank that does not get subdivisions of IV, III, II, and I. Apex Predator is the highest rank one can achieve in the battle royale game. Currently, the Master ranked players per platform in the top 750 falls into this category. While having the Apex Predator is a perk in its own right, these elite players must keep their RP to stay as a Predator in the game, or else they'll lose their position to another Apex Predator.

The amount of RP you need to jump from one tier to the subsequent increases as you climb the rank ladder. Here is the complete list of RP required to climb through tiers in Apex Legends ranks:

  • Rookie: 250 RP
  • Bronze: 500 RP
  • Silver: 600 RP
  • Gold: 700 RP
  • Platinum: 800 RP
  • Diamond: 900 RP

Rookie Tier - What Is It in Apex Legends?

This is the introductory tier for new Apex Legends players to learn the ropes about the Ranked mode in the game. Although there are no rewards associated with it, the Rookie tier provides you with a safe space to get into the highly competitive Battle Royale gameplay.

All Ways To Earn Ranked Points in Apex Legends

The RP earned in Apex Legends is determined by:

  • The number of players you kill. The higher you placed in a match, the more each kill is worth.
  • Killing high-ranked players or placing in the top five teams in a streak.
  • Your placement among 20 teams when a match ends. The better placements yield more RP, especially in the top 5.

Important: There is no RP earned for heals or revives.

Apex Legends RP Cost For Ranked Play

Every Ranked game requires an RP entry fee to queue, and you earn RP back by placing in the top 50% of a match. The entry fee to queue is the following based on your tier:

  • Rookie/Bronze: 0 RP
  • Silver: 20 RP
  • Gold: 35 RP
  • Platinum: 55 RP
  • Diamond: 75 RP
  • Master/Predator: 100 RP

Why My Apex Legends Ranked Game Ended With Fewer Ranked Points Than What I Started With?

If you perform poorly and your team is placed near the bottom at the end, not only do you not gain any RP but also lose the RP you spent you join the match. As a result, you end up with fewer ranked points than what you started with.

How Is My Apex Legends Score Calculated?

Your score in Apex Legends is not a sum of wins and losses. It is a combined result of your team placement, enemies you eliminate, and any bonuses you get.

Placement

In any Apex Legends match, there are 20 teams, and your placement refers to where you finished out of 20. The higher you place, the more RP you earn.

Eliminations

You earn RP through kills. This is accrued through your total kills and assists. A kill or assist counts as one kill. Also, you receive a half-kill if your teammates kill a player and you damage that player. Moreover, the higher your placement at the end, the more RP you earn per kill. However, for any kills over 6, the value of each subsequent kill, assist, and placement you make is halved.

Bonuses

There are RP bonuses for kill and placement streaks. If you kill someone ranked higher than you, you receive an additional 50% of that end kill value as a bonus.

Placement streaks give you bonuses for the top 5 placements. Therefore, if you place Top 5 for a second consecutive game, you'll get 10 RP. For the third, 20 RP. For fourth, 30 RP. For fifth, 40 RP. Once you get 40 RP for the fifth consecutive placement in a row, then anything in a row after that (beyond 5) will always yield 40 RP.

Note that this streak will reset if you place anywhere below the top 5.

Ranked Split in Apex Legends

Apex Legends' ranked system is based on seasons and offers ranked rewards after the season ends. Each season has two splits, each lasting for roughly two months. As such, there are two rank resets per season: a ranked reset when a new season drops and a second rank reset at the mid-season split.

Your new RP gets adjusted based on your ranking data before the reset. Although new players will start with 1 RP, those who ranked during the last split will have their RP adjusted for the new season reset. It won’t go down to zero, though, and you won't have to lead your progress back to where it originally was. For example, your Gold III rank might reset to Silver II at a reset.

What Are The Ranked Rewards and Badges in Apex Legends?

apex ranked rewards

The ranked rewards that a player receives are based on the highest rank they achieve before a rank reset occurs in the game. These ranked rewards include:

Badges: Every player gets badges on their character banner to highlight their rank and skill level in the game.

  • Holosprays: Bronze or above-ranking players also get holosprays alongside banners as ranked rewards.
  • Weapon Cosmetics: Gold and above-ranking players get exclusive weapon skins that change the texture of their favorite guns into cool looks.
  • Banner Frames: Only Diamond, Master, and Apex Predator players get to have banner frames. These are unique banner frames that surround whichever Legend you select.

As seen above, the higher you climb, the more impressive and exclusive your rewards will be.

Starting from Season 21, the Apex Legends ranked system also introduced a new way to earn badges. If you progress to the same rank in both splits of a season, you will be awarded an animated badge (otherwise, you will receive a plain static badge).

Unable To Join A Friend’s Party in Apex Legends - What Ranks Can We Play Together?

You cannot have teammates more than three ranks apart in your party. If this happens, then matchmaking fails. Respawn (with EA's help) does this to ensure that no boosting place takes place and that everyone can have a level playing field. These rank restrictions are in place for all premade-ranked squads.
