Biography

Clove is the first Scottish agent (25th agent overall) to feature in Valorant. Born and raised in Edinburgh, they have a strong accent and love for storytelling, which are key aspects of their character. The story of their origin is also interesting. During an extended leave from the Protocol, Omen searches for a journal related to the Hourglass corporation. There, it discovers Clove in an Edinburgh library. Amazed by Clove’s powers, Omen arranges Clove’s introduction to the Protocol.

Clove’s extraordinary power includes immortality. Unlike other Radiants, it does not die in the traditional sense. Instead, each death is an opportunity to return to life. This adds a touch of flair to their character. When Clove joins Protocol, the young agent serves as the Dungeon Master for Protocol’s Dungeons & Dragons game days and narrates strategies at the start of matches.

In short, we can summarise Clove as:

Name: Clove (Agent 25)

Origin: Edinburgh, Scotland

Role: Controller

Gender: Non-binary agent

Age: A young immortal

Unique Powers: Immortality and Resurrection

Personality: Mischievous, fearless, eloquent

Protocol Role: Dungeon Master, Morale Booster, Strategist

Personality

Clove is known as a young, immortal and troublemaker who is mischievous, witty, and bold. If you enjoy a touch of flair, you will love playing them. They are aggressive and not afraid to take risks. After all, you can imagine how fearless someone who is not scared of death will be. For Clove, death is not an end but another adventure. Hailing from Scotland, they are more nuanced and well-spoken than other agents in Valorant. You will find interesting dialogues and rich storytelling. But what makes them truly unique is their resilient and defiant personality. They love to turn setbacks into opportunities.

According to Riot Games:

‘Clove is fearless-in how they talk, in how they live, and in how they approach every round. That’s what sets them apart.’

Appearance

We can best describe Clove’s appearance as being aligned with the fashion sense of Gen-Z - expressive, bold, and slightly rebellious. Instead of appearing vintage-like immortal characters, they exude a modern, punk-inspired look. The color theme of their outfit features a combination of pink and purple, giving them a vibrant and energetic look. The clothing looks casual yet stylish, with a pink jacket and purple shorts. The short hair is black at the roots, fading to a pinkish-purple at the ends. The accessories also complement its character. You will find a headband with small black horns. To reflect elements of rebirth and immortality, butterfly motifs are scattered throughout its appearance.

Riot Games has intentionally designed the Clove’s character to look playful and young. And it's a breath of fresh air that they decided to move beyond the typical stereotype of immortals. You will find it very different from serious or mature-looking agents, such as Brimstone, Fade, or Viper. All in all, we can say that Clove is a unique and distinct character in Valorant with the right blend of modern fashion, punk energy, and vibrant colors.

Clove's Ultimate Abilities

Clove is a controller agent in Valorant. Its job is to make it harder for the enemies to see or move freely. While all controllers act similarly, Clove stands out in its ability to support the team even after its death. The agent selection screen features additional icons to help players quickly identify Clove’s abilities. Let us break down all four abilities in detail.

Meddle (Q)

Meddle is the decay ability of Clove. It throws an orb that explodes after a short delay when it lands. It interacts with the level geometry in a way that it explodes upon contacting the ground or any in-game surface. Then, it temporarily decays the health of nearby enemies. Moreover, you hear a projectile audio when you fire one. So it gets easier to kill them. However, this lethal damage lasts for a few seconds, so you must act fast to eliminate your enemies.

Pick-Me-Up (C)

Clove’s healing ability is called Pick-Me-Up. When you kill an enemy or help your teammate finish one, you get an extra temporary health known as ‘overheal.’ For a short period, you get a speed boost as well. Even in full health, you can use Pick-Me-Up to surprise another enemy or enjoy quick retreats.

Ruse (E)

The Clove’s smoke ability is called Ruse. It blocks vision for about 14 seconds. The locations where Clove's clouds are placed are easy to spot. You get clear visual cues about where the Clove's clouds will settle. This allows Clove to control the battlefield while gaining haste for quick repositioning.

The best part about Ruse is that you can use it even after Clove’s death. However, the range is limited after death. So, stay near the action to make the most out of Clove's clouds.

Not Dead Yet (X - Ultimate Ability)

Not Dead Yet is Clove’s signature ability, making it stand out. Even after it's dead, it can come back to life using Not Dead Yet.

When dying, activate to resurrect, but remember that a resurrected Clove must earn their second life by securing a kill or assist within 12 seconds. It can use Pick Me Up when an enemy is eliminated (whether it's an enemy that Clove damaged or killed), gaining temporary health and a speed boost.

How to Play Clove Valorant

Clove acts as a young immortal, keeping foes guessing. By consuming a fragment of immortality essence, they stay alive by securing a kill or a damaging assist. Here are some tips and tricks to master playing Clove and maximize your impact in every match.

Play Aggressively

Clove is not like typical Controllers who sit back and support the team from afar. Instead, its style of play encourages players to stay near the action. When you defeat a fallen enemy that Clove damaged, you can absorb their life force, gaining haste and temporary health. Moreover, you can help duelists take space or use Pick Me Up to remain alive and reposition quickly for the next fight. Moreover, Clove can support the team even after death.

Use Smokes Smartly

Clove is best at launching clouds that block vision and can use alt-fire to confirm their placement. Placing smokes (Ruse) on common angles like ‘Mid on Split’ or ‘A Main on Bind’ is better to give your team a strategic advantage. However, do not throw all your smokes at once. Wait for information or enemy contact to maximize their impact. You must confirm launching clouds to ensure precise positioning on the map. The recent update increased the assist time window. Now, it's easier to benefit from teamwork. Even after death, Clove supports the team with post-death smokes. Just use fire to confirm launching in the last few frames of your life for maximum impact.

Use Meddle for Decay and Setups

Meddle lands with a short delay and temporarily decays targets caught inside, allowing you to tank lethal damage, specifically during fights. Throw meddles at common hiding spots or before site entries. The best part is that you can instantly absorb the life force with Pick Me Up after defeating a fallen enemy. You can also pair the meddle ability with other teammates. For instance, interfere with Raze’s grenade or Breach’s stun for lethal combos. You can also use alt-fire with some abilities to adjust their placement or effect.

Clove Update History in Valorant

Since Clove’s release, several updates have been made to balance its power and refine its gameplay experience. Let us take a closer look at its update history.

Patch 8.05 (Clove’s Release)

On March 26, 2024, Clove went live as Valorant’s newest controller agent. At launch, it had four abilities, namely Ruse (E), Meddle (Q), Pick Me Up (C), and Not Dead Yet (X). This patch fixed issues like minor bugs and introduced social updates.

Patch 8.04 (Major Balance Adjustments)

In Patch 8.04, several ability adjustments were made to balance its powers. For instance, Meddle had longer explodes before, allowing enemies to react. Now, it explodes 0.75 seconds after ground contact. Previously, it was 1.3 seconds. Ruse cooldown time increased from 30 seconds to 40 seconds. Similarly, Pick Me Up's ‘overheal’ duration increased from 8 seconds to 10 seconds while the speed duration reduced from 8 seconds to 3 seconds.

These changes keep Clove impactful but not overpowered, encouraging the need for strategic use and a balance between controller agents.
